FAQs
What is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy combines traditional counselling with the creative process to deliver unique therapeutic benefits. In Canada, clinical Art Therapy is facilitated by a Professional Art Therapist who has completed a graduate-level program recognized by the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA). Many Art Therapists, including myself, also hold additional designations, such as the Registered Counselling Therapist (Candidate) (RCT-C) in Nova Scotia,
Do I have to make art?
Our time together is always guided by choice. You decide how much or how little you’d like to engage with art in each session. Some days, you may feel like talking the whole time without making art, while on others, you might immerse yourself fully in the creative process without saying much at all. Most often, it’s a mix of both. However you choose to show up, there is always space for you.
What if I’m not ‘good’ at art?
Good news - you don’t have to be! There is NO art experience required to engage in these sessions. Along with more traditional art techniques (drawing, painting, sculpting), Art Therapy can also include:
Fibre arts (knitting, crochet, embroidery)
Scribbling
Poetry and creative writing
Photo-editing and collage
Brainstorms/mind-maps
Found objects
Sand tray work
Altered books
Video-game development and more!
What would you like to bring into session?
What does a typical session look like?
Because I take a person-centred approach, each session is unique and shaped by your needs in the moment. You are always in control of the process—some days, you may feel drawn to creating intuitively and spontaneously, while other times, you might prefer more guidance. I’ll have prompts available to help you explore deeper, but whether you follow them or let your intuition lead the way is entirely up to you. Most often, sessions are a mix of both, allowing space for creativity, reflection, and meaningful self-discovery.
Are sessions covered by insurance?
If your insurance plan includes services with Registered Counselling Therapists you will be able to submit your receipt for reimbursement.
Why should I try Art Therapy?
Trauma is often stored in the body and mind in ways that words alone can’t fully access. Because art engages the nonverbal parts of the brain, it allows us to explore deeper-held experiences, emotions, and beliefs that may be difficult to put into words. Art therapy provides a safe and creative space to process these feelings at your own pace, leading to whole-body healing and greater emotional well-being. No artistic skill is needed—just a willingness to explore.
